Start with the original photo in your device’s photo app. Zoom in on the part you plan to use. If it is already soft there, Instagram is not the only cause. Avoid using a screenshot of a small avatar as your new upload.

If a downloaded profile picture looks blurry

Check the saved file’s pixel dimensions in its information or properties panel. A small thumbnail can look clear as a tiny circle but blurry when displayed full-screen. Making the browser preview bigger does not add image detail.

For example, a 150 × 150 image contains 22,500 pixels. A 600 × 600 image contains 360,000 pixels. These are illustrative dimensions, not a promise that Instagram offers both versions for a particular profile. Enlarging the smaller file to 600 × 600 does not create the missing detail.
